About a fortnight ago it developed a louder than normal whistle on boost considering the fragile nature of these turbos I wanted to check it out sooner rather than later.

The most common issue is the canister/tube that the oil cap screws on to and houses the dipstick. It would need soaked overnight in a parts wash to clean it right. Thankfully, they aren't a dear thing to buy turbos for, even from Renault, so it won't cost a fortune to rectify if it does turn out to be turbo failure.
